February- Big Joe

Sorry for the delay. It's been a semester of work thus far.

This month's horse that is adoptable is in Kansas City, MO. His name is Big Joe. He is a 25 year old paint/pinto who would be really ideal for a younger child learning to ride. He can only carry 100 lbs or less at a walk/trot due to some arthritis, but otherwise would be a very good little lesson horse. There is a video on his webpage of him being ridden, so be sure to take a look!

  3. Cute for an old guy. Why not just let him live out his days though?

  4. I would think with some of his limits, he'd do just mostly that. At the same time, I think a lot of children who want to learn to ride don't always get an opportunity to do it on a nice, sane horse. I personally learned on a spry and healthy 20+ yr. old ex race horse. You needed to be in your teens on up to even be on him because he needed just that extra bit of mind control since there was still some habits from his racing days buried deep in him. Like if you lost your reins...away he'd go. I loved that horse and never had an issue with him, but there are those out there who need a horse that when you drop your reins, he stops and sits there. Lesson horses are a dime a dozen sometimes.

  5. CS, I'd have to disagree with you on that one... a good lesson horse is a pearl beyond price! There are a lot of lesson horses, but the ones that love and babysit young beginners are invaluable. My old soldier will pout up a storm unless he has a kidlet or two to pack around, and he is enough horse to give a young rider the skills and security to advance when they are ready. It's almost eerie to watch him use his years of wisdom to actually teach children, and his years of advanced training help them learn skills that they would never learn on any other horse. When he was younger he did not have the patience for it!
