Vanners, Fluff, and Fatties on gaited horses

From FHOTD
FHOTD back in: See, I tell you, there is something with all those baroque breeds that is just a magnet for crazy. Gaited horses attract obese people who want to ride the crap out of them as 2 year olds, and baroque breeds attract pretentious, crazy women! I’m not saying you’re all crazy, but folks, Friesians and Vanners have a magnetic force field that attracts loonies like Wal-Mart attracts people with interesting fashion sense.

Later that same day...
fhotd says: April 4, 2010 at 2:40 pmSometimes I really feel like I need to present a venn diagram with my post for some of you:

Just because type of horse A attracts type of person B does not mean that is ALL it attracts.

Obviously, some of you are perfectly sane. But it is a fact that whenever I encounter a story like Genevieve’s, dollars to donuts the person is going to be involved with one of the following:

1. Friesians
2. Gypsy Vanners
3. Something else with a lot of mane. I.E. Arabians

Whereas every time I encounter a story where someone is more just shady and evil in a business sense – sane, but rotten – they are likely to be involved with a stock breed or Thoroughbreds.

I am fairly certain that if I made a chart from the beginning of this blog, we could show this pattern. I am not picking on anyone’s breed in particular, or anyone’s discipline, as you should all know by now. I’m merely stating that every breed has its cross to bear and fluffy horses tend to get delusional women whose don’t live in reality and whose web sites includes a lot of talk about their dreams and magikal horses and associated claptrap.

So, if you’re a sane person with fluffy horses, obviously this does not apply to you so why would you be offended by it?

Could not the same be said for buckskin stallions of questionable conformation?

  5. When did Fubb get a degree period? According to her linkedin (which she removed) she hasnt had a single job over 2 years her whole life.
She made a comment once about depression and that she was prone to it. I think she might need to consider therapy and learn why she is so hateful.

"What is her problem with foundation QH's."

I don't know. But her continual comments about the lack of quality that foundation-bred QH's have is a glaring tell of her complete lack of knowledge of QH breeding.

I still chuckle over her bashing of Dixie Beach last year, for being way back there on the VLC's pedigree. She obviously has no clue that the VLC has 5 crosses to the same genetics(through Lady Coolidge-Dixie Beach's FULL sister), all in the 6th generation.

Bert-a son of Lady Coolidge is on the 5th generation and Page Lee, an inbred son, who was the product of mating a son of Lady Coolidge to a daughter of Lady Coolidge shows up twice in the 5th generation.

Since she generally seems to distain QH breeding, does that mean that she only figured out a way to rook YHI out of the VLC because she was anxious to own a 16.2HH, buckskin stallion? She has made several comments about how rare they are. Wouldn't that make her one of those middle-aged, horse-crazed, krazy ladies who thinks they have to own something rare or special?

YHI knows full well that the VLC is not a product of a mish-mosh of random BYB breeding that somehow magically turned out 'special'...being a 16.2HH, buckskin stallion. The VLC is exactly what she was breeding for and it's a crying shame that the horse ended up in the wrong hands.

The cited example in the original blog was riding two-year-olds into the ground. I weigh seventy-nine pounds, and if I rode a two-year-old gaited into the dirt it would break. Little factoid thar.

I weighed 79 pounds back in the 4th grade. In the 5th grad I started growing, in the 6th grade I hit 6 feet. I started gained weight AFTER I had my 4 kids, I am now 220 and eat 1200 Calories a day.

How old do you think "young rider" is? How do you like being judged by a girl who doesn't have boobs yet?

  8. FHOTD was overweight a few years ago, when she lived in Los Angeles. She posted daily comments on her very public livejournal.com which she recently mysteriously deleted.
She crash dieted- not a healthy way to lose weight, and was frustrated.

Now WHY hasn't she ever shared that with her readers?

  9. The photo is of the Portuguese Riding School who are respected for their training and riding. The horses they ride are baroque horses and are ridden by at least one obese member. Another obese rider of baroque horses was Nuno Oliveira who is considered one of the top riders of the twentieth century. Isn't it funny how obese only matters if it's a woman.

Fugly knows nothing about baroque horses and their owners. The baroque horse is an expensive animal that is bred and bought for their quality of movement. There is very little room for crazy here or at least it would have to be a crazy with a big pocket book and extensive training.

  11. NOOOO !!! not the Gypsy Vanners!!! I am addicted to all things GV on you tube ,or any other sites .I do not need one , but dang I can't stop looking at them!

  12. FV,
How are you and your beautiful horses doing? By the way, if anyone wants to see gorgeous, well trained, and sane Appaloosas go to FV's website, I say "sane" to contradict a myth about appys.

Most people would agree with you about the GV. It's funny that people spreading the myths and that have all the objections are TB and WB people. It's the old "if you don't like TB or WB then you don't know anything about horses" attitude. It's breedism pure and simple. The same group trashes horses of the baroque category, saddleseat, and western riders. There are plenty of reasons why other breeds don't look or move like a TB or WB and why they are valued.

I think that the main reason for their lack of awareness is that they, as group, are closed off from other breeds. There is nothing in their education that allows for a well-rounded perspective. An individual has to make an effort to understand other traditions. Sadly, most won't, yet talk with authority on tradition they do not comprehend. It's this group that Fugly caters too and supports their myth-understandinds.

  13. bhm, the gang are well, Classy is slated to be home from Sask on Weds so I am in trouble then! wont be wanting to sell her once I get her home! Thanks for the nod btw .

  14. I adore Gypsy Vanners, I would love to have one. However, the myths that surround them are perpetuated by this country alone and are out and out fibs. While it is quite expensive to get one to America, I find it ridiculous that breeders in this country won't tell the truth about them just so they can rake in ridiculous amounts of money for them. In their originating country, they're a dime a dozen and are often than not sold for their meat.

But, like I said, I still want one. I think they are one of the most gorgeous horse I have ever lay my eyes on. The color, the stoutness, the majesty, that 80's rock star hair? Shoot, I wouldn't kick one out of my pasture, I tell you what!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I've heard the same goes for Quarter Horses in Europe, people will pay big money for one and they are hard to find. But maybe it's just a rumor?

One thing about FHOtD and her followers are how they attack different groups, it's kind of like the shut up and sing thing. I want to go to a concert and hear your music, I don't want to hear you rant against capitalism after I just forked over $60 for a ticket. Just stick to the topic, for example horse conformation, why do you have to drag in overweight people, republicans, democrats, Christians, etc. Realize that your readers are going to be all of the above and stick to the one thing that we all have in common. If I want to get my weight, height, breed, religion and political beliefs bashed there are plenty of other forums for that.

  16. Anon,
In the UK the term "coloured cob" is used as a catch-all phrase to group horses together of certain type. Within this group there are crosses, lower quality and inexpensive meat horses, and lines that are true breeds and more expensive.

The Gypsy Horse Association originally imported the lines that were true breeds and that went for a good price in the UK. The Gypsy Vanner Association imported horse of quality and some members imported meat horses. The two associations have since unified their objectives.

For a comparison I will create a catch-all phrase called "sporthorse". The sporthorse is a catch-all phrase that describes horses of a certain physical type. In this group I will place draft crosses, the less expensive horses more likely to be sold for meat, and the Warmblood breeds who are true breeds and generally more expensive. It is not accurate to call the WB a cheap, meat horse because some lower end crosses are. Similarly, some coloured cobs are high end breeds and some are cheap crosses that sold for meat.

The North Americans imported purebred GHs that were sold for a good price long before the NA entered the market. This is why classing all GHs as a cheap meat horse is inaccurate. I find the term "meat horse" as unhelpful because TB and QH are most likely to be meat horses. This doesn't mean that all members of the breed are low cost and of poor quality. In South America spanish horses are meat horses, but in North American they are expensive. Also, the WB, during the WWII was used to plough fields and was sold as meat. So, I don't know what horses are not meat horses. These labels are either untrue or grossly inaccurate.

I love watching the GHs on youtube and the Friesians.

  19. I'm not impressed with the yahoo answers. Some of them managed to cut through the crap but they missed the point that a well breed Gypsy cob showing true breed characteristics will cost a lot in the UK. This was years before they were exported to the US.

As far as aptitude, we pay $20,000 + for WB that can jump a three foot course and not much more, so why not pay that for the breed you like. The GH is natural light on the fore and shows great aptitude for self carriage more so than the WB. Today, we are too caught up in the notion that it has to be a light horse or WB or just doesn't count to look past the breed stereotypes to the actual movement of the horse. The GH is a very impressive mover and shares much in common with the original Andalusian horse which was prized for it's movement.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The point of the matter, is, I agree with the Yahoo answer the person gave. Greed and people with more money than common sense. Don't get me wrong, I love the breed and intend to get one if it's the last thing I do. But the stories that are fabricated about them to pull in hapless suckers so they can be parted from their money is what aggravates me. I'm a sucker for honesty.

An reader from outside of America, and unfortunately going a bit off topic because I wonder if you could help me.
I’ve jumped into horses, having been encouraged to dive by one of my online friends. But I’m still a bit lousy in the conformation and how well-bred horses look like, while I got the color genetics down to an art. Any blog or a website of sort that can showcase the conformation of horses, or even make a showcase of “Good VS Bad” of either breeds or color? I understand that the Fugly Horse of the Day is very popular, though the name is a bit of a misnomer as I had expected to see what I’m looking for at this site.
Can anyone point me to the right direction? In sort, I’m looking for a site that takes images of real horses, showcases any conformation points, no matter if it is of the good spectrum or the bad, or even shows difference between well bred horses vs bad bred horses of the same breed.

  22. Backpeddle much Fubb??

That is exactly it and I don’t know why people are so oversensitive. I’ve written numerous blogs on selecting the right horse for a larger rider, etc. I have no problem with larger riders. My crack was SPECIFICALLY targeted at all the beer-bellied Bubbas we’ve seen on youtube abusive scawny, tiny two year old gaited horses. If you don’t get that, go back and read more of the blog, because you’ve missed the joke.

Oh and scawny is spelled scrawny unless your starting your own language

  23. You know, I liked FHoTD originally. I started reading it when it was mostly conformation critiques. I love horses, and do a lot with equine-assisted therapy, but I didn't have a lot of experience at that time. Then the tone started to get a lot more negative, and more showboating crept in, but I could still pick out interesting bits here and there. It disturbed me when she started posting names and numbers, but I remembered the early entries and hoped it would circle back eventually (I'm an incurable optimist).

What killed it for me was the HSUS entry. It was straight-up "look at me, I'm so special" without any issue to hide behind. It solidified my doubts and I started reading much more critically. Her attitude was condescending and self-obsessed.

I'm not so much of a "horses are livestock" person. I know some people are, and that's okay. As long as the animal is treated humanely, that's all that really matters. Some of the animals pulled off the truck really should have been humanely euthanized. I suppose "here's a healthy horse who only needs a little bit of help to be useful" doesn't make for as many donations, though.

  25. This was the one that pissed me off... Fubbs was told over and over this mare wasnt in foal but noooo "SEND MONEY SAVE HER" she cried...and now this update....
I have to include an update/brag about Exclusive Report, aka Hope. You will remember her from this blog entry. I saw her in the kill pen and flipped out because she just screamed quality and you all know how I am about red mares. Oh, and we were all sure she was heavy in foal – it actually took two separate vets to convince us otherwise because she has major broodie belly! Anyway, so this gorgeous mare whinnied at me and said, HEY, get me out of here and with the help of some very kind donors, we did.

2 Vets to convince you? That would have paid Hercs board! Fubbs put your money where your mouth is.. You bitch about CBER and yet you defend SOS who lets ABR bail the horses then lets them sit for years now in 12x12 mud pens, adopts sick and lame horses as children's mounts when they have been assessed in a alleyway bareback w/ halter WTF is the real story there? Oh yeas they pay you for ads.
Remember your mantra if you adopt a horse dont cry for $$ after you adopt it? Why is it OK for you? And who the hell is "we" you have no cred with SAFE or Ponyup so who is WE???

  26. What stories do you mean? All I hear is negative misinformation about them.

About their "pedigrees"...about why none of the horses have real names, and are called things like "Joe Blow's Mare" and the "Post Office Stallion" and such. The real Gypsy horse breeders in the UK know darn well which horses are in which pedigrees, breeding quality animals is never a happy accident.

When some of the more unscrupulous people bring over the unpedigreed, meat-quality cobs, they make up stories about "how the Gypsies do it" to account for the fact that the lineage is unknown.

  28. Oh, and BHM, TODAY'S Fuglyblog is one I hoped you'd go after. I really dislike all the personal stuff about her, and I don't care for all the rescue crap, because to me it sounds like identical drama from all sides...but her thoughts/opinions and "facts" on animal slaughter ARE GROSSLY IN ERROR.

She has never stood on a Canadian kill floor. I have.

She has never watched animals load ONTO a Canadian kill floor. I have.

She has never watched the butcher's wife LAY INTO a farmer for transporting his cows in a less-than-adequate trailer and refuse to take any more of his stock until he shapes up. I have.

She has never recovered the carcass of a 4H cow, sold legally at auction, off the railroad tracks after some Animal Welfare Advocates set it free. My husband has.

She clearly has never pet a tame horse, wearing a smock covered in cow blood as it entered the gates, NOT panicked by the sight or smell. Been there too.

She has never reviewed the published Canadian slaughterhouse/abbatoir regulations, and discussed each point with a real, live slaughterhouse owner. I have, cover to cover.

She has never studied the mechanics of a captive bolt gun, nor observed it in use. Real scientists have, and their results differ from the "studies" released by non-scientists at Animal Welfare groups.

She has never, EVER visited slaughterhouses that use rifles at close range to kill animals, because if she had, she'd shut up about the captive bolts...they AREN'T THAT POPULAR, even at factory slaughterhouses.

She has never spoken to a butcher about the few times a kill failed. In his 30 year history. That he remembers, each and every one. Heard about how critically dangerous it is when that happens and how IMMEDIATELY it is resolved...

I could go on. I like a lot of things about fugly, especially how she is a real rider, about on par with where many of us are (if we are honest about our own flaws) and she has the common sense about a lot of horsey things that people like me appreciate. WE DIFFER SIGNIFICANTLY in our knowledge and opinions on the Canadian slaughter industry.

    ReplyDelete
  29. From her blog today on slaughter

Now, here’s a video you can all watch. This is a little rescued Thoroughbred filly at her first horse show with her young rider. Amanda, you are doing a LOVELY job and I hope someone tells you I said so!

Why would anyone care to tell their child you said so? OMG she is so self absorbed she thinks they would care that she isnt tearing a child apart for once?

    -----------

Now, that I agree with. My complaint is with calling all GHs crosses and meat horses. This is clearly not the case. If there is any doubt about pedigree I'd go with the Gypsy Horse Association which only registers pedigree horses and those that are a breed.

I loved this guy for four good years with all my heart and soul, even when he gave me sexual infections that almost ended up my life because of his womanizing ways, I still love and care for him, he was a demanding type, all he care about was getting high friends and flirting around with girls like a celeb. I thought I could change him and be with him forever because I love him, but all my effort crashed and he instead wanted to change me his useless lifestyle. I keep praying for him to change until I was directed my Cousin to contact DR ALEX (DELIVERSPELLTEMPLE@gmail.com) who will help me spiritual to be a normal human being.

Thanks to DR ALEX that broke the evil spell that was cast on him by his ex because they had a dramatic breakup. I am glad that he has changed and became a responsible man, the spell brought back his lost opportunities and he got a good job now. I am so happy today and forever that I have achieved my goal by changing him to a better man with the help of my Cousin (MARRY JANE) and DR ALEX.
